Grafer(TM), Shareware Version 2.1, INSTALLATION AND REGISTRATION
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Grafer(TM), v2.1 <ASP>, makes Line Graphs and Scatter Plots for reports
Grafer(TM), v2.1 <ASP>, makes ANSI look-alike graphs suitable for
scientific and engineering reports. The Line Graphs and Scatter Plots
are built from X-Y data entered from the keyboard, a text file, or the
Clipboard. The "Picture" Graphs can be Copied to the Clipboard and
Pasted into other applications as an adjustable graph. Saved graphs are
in text file format. Printed graphs are adjustable in size.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Grafer requires, as a minimum, an IBM AT or compatible computer with
Windows 3.1 installed and running. The current memory in your computer
should be adequate if you are able to use other Windows 3.1 applications
satisfactorily. The hard disk space needed is less than 175 kilobytes.
Grafer will not run with Windows 3.0, use only Windows 3.1.
GRAFER INSTALLATION
You will probably receive Grafer in one of two ways. In the first
way, you will have a floppy disk with the nine individual files listed
below:
GRAFER.EXE - Grafer executable for Windows 3.1
GRAFER..HLP - Grafer help for Windows 3.1
REGISTER.TXT - Registration form for Users
README.TXT - Getting Started Documentation (this file)
GRAFTEST.GRF - A test graph as described in a Help item
ELECT.GRF - A graph of residential power consumption
INSTALL.EXE - Installation Program for Grafer
VENDOR.TXT - Vendor/Sysop Information
FILE_ID.DIZ - BBS description of Grafer
If you have a disk with the nine files, use the instructions given in
the section below titled, "USING THE INSTALL PROGRAM".
The second way to receive Grafer is in a compressed file or archive.
The compressed file name should be GRAFER21.xxx where xxx indicates which
file compression utility was used. In this case, use the suggestions
given in the section titled, "INSTALL FROM A COMPRESSED FILE".
If you prefer to install Grafer manually, copy the first six files
listed above to the directory of your choice. Install the first four
files in the Windows Group of your choice, from the Program Manager "File"
menu, by selecting "New..."
USING THE INSTALL PROGRAM
To install Grafer, start up Windows 3.1 and put the Grafer
floppy disk in Drive A. From the Windows Program Manager "File" menu,
select "Run". Type "A:INSTALL" in the box that appears. After you press
"ENTER" or click on the "OK" button, the Install program will start on
the floppy drive. If you are installing from B drive, substitute the
letter B for the letter A above.
The Install program will copy the Grafer files to a new directory
titled "GRAFER" on your hard drive (C:). You will have an opportunity
to revise the directory and installation location. Click on the "OK"
button or press the "ENTER" key to start the file transfer to the
directory you selected.
The Install program will also create a Windows Group named "Grafer"
and put the Grafer icons in that group. You may move the Grafer
icons to another group later if desired.
INSTALL FROM A COMPRESSED FILE
If you received Grafer as a single file such as GRAFER21.ZIP, copy
this file to a temporary directory on your hard disk. Next, decompress
the file using a decompression utility program. The DOS command might
be PKUNZIP GRAFER21.ZIP if that compression utility was used to compress
the file. Several other compression/decompression utilities are in
common use. You can probably obtain the correct utility from the same
place you obtained the Grafer archive.
If the Grafer archive file name is GRAFER21.EXE, you decompress it by
running it as you would any DOS program. No other utilities are needed.
Once the archive file is decompressed, you should have the nine files
listed above in your temporary directory. Now you can install Grafer
as described above in the section titled, "USING THE INSTALL
PROGRAM". Instead of typing "A:INSTALL" in the "Run" dialog box, you
would type, "C:\TMP\INSTALL", where C:\TMP is the current hard drive and
directory where the nine files are located.
RUNNING GRAFER
To start Grafer, double-click the mouse on the Grafer icon.
From the keyboard, use the Arrow keys to move to the Grafer icon and
then press the "ENTER" key.
To maneuver in Grafer, use the same keys that you use in Microsoft
Windows. For more information on using Windows keys, see your Windows
manual Appendix C.
Selecting "Exit" from the "File" menu item closes Grafer. You can
also use the Alt+F4 key combination to do the same thing.
GRAFER DOCUMENTATION
All of the Grafer features are documented in Grafer Help. You
can select the "Help" menu item from within Grafer or you can double
click on the "Grafer Help" icon. Either way, the Windows Help program
will run Grafer Help.
PRINTING THIS FILE
To print this file from Windows, first load it into the Notepad editor
that comes with Windows by double-clicking on the "Read Me" icon. Next,
click on the "File" menu item and then select the "Print" command. You
may want to select the "Print Setup.." command first to make sure that
your printer is ready and properly setup.
To print the file from DOS, use the command line, PRINT README.TXT.

DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are
expected to purchase it by registering. Individual programs differ on
details -- some request registration while others require it, some
specify a maximum trial period. With registration, you get anything from
the simple right to continue using the software to an updated program
with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as
stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like
commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both
cases, there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in
the method of distribution. The author specifically grants the right to
copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
specific group. For example, some authors require written permission
before a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should
find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's
commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs
easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead
is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back
guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.
ASP STATEMENT
This program is produced by a member of the Association of Shareware
Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the Shareware
principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a Shareware
related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member directly,
ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a
dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide technical
support for members' products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545
Grover Road, Muskegon, MI USA 49442-9427, FAX 616-788-2765, or send a
CompuServe message via CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536.
